3rd Annual Pullman Firefighters – 2019 Fireman’s Ball

On Saturday, February 9th, 2019 the 3rd Annual Fireman’s Ball was held at the SEL Event Center in Pullman, Washington. This event is put on by the Pullman Firefighters to raise funds to help individuals who are affected by emergencies.

I was asked to take photographs for the event. It was set up in two areas. One was to do “couples” photos and the other was just candid shots from the event.

My setup was the solid black background hanging free. It was illuminated with two light boxes. I didn’t have as much light as I would have liked. I didn’t use a flash just the light boxes. I used my Canon 6D with a 50mm prime f/1.2 lens. I wanted to ensure I had a good depth of field so I used f/8. Even with a speed of 1/60th of a second for the shutter I was forced to increase the ISO setting to 1000. Way higher than I would have liked but the best I could do with the other settings and the lack of lighting. I just need more light boxes or other lighting without the flash. I have been unhappy with the flash near the camera due to the shadowing I get on my backgrounds. Maybe I just need the umbrella flash system. Nonetheless they are not terrible but they are not as sharp as I would have liked.

This was also the first time to do real “couples” photos. So I see some things I would do differently next time. I allows people to get into their own poses. I didn’t scrutinize anything but I think I will give some helpful tips for the next time around and stage people better.

For the candid shots I was in a darker room. I used both the Canon 70D and 6D camera. The 70D had a 18-135mm zoom. The 6D had the 50mm prime lens. Both cameras had external flashes with a light diffuser. Both had ISO settings into the 1000-1600 range. I think overall the candid shots turned out as good as I was going to get them with the lighting at hand. Again I think I could have done better with my flash usage and I will work on that in the future. I tried to make my way around to the tables and get some candid couples shots there too.

The event went very well. Lots of people showed up and they raised money for the cause.

High School Boys Basketball – Pullman vs Cheney – Jan. 4, 2018

On January 4th , 2019 I took photos at the Pullman High School boys basketball game versus Cheney High School. Pullman entered the night with a Great Northern League (GNL) record of 3-0 with a 10-0 record overall. This league match-up of the Pullman High Greyhounds and the Cheney High Blackhawks was played in Pullman. Cheney entered the game with a 2-1 GNL and a 4-4 overall record.

After the first quarter of play Cheney lead Pullman 16 – 10. By halftime, however, Pullman had tied the score 22 all. In the second half of play Pullman extended their lead by 2 points. They got some breathing room down the stretch. Pullman won by a final score of 50 – 45. This moves Pullman to a league leading 4-0 record.

I went to the game with two cameras. I had my trust Canon 70D and my new Canon 6D Mark II. I used a couple different lenses. I ended up liking the 50mm f/1.8 prime and Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II lenses the best.

I also had my new Spider Pro holster system in place. This is a belt worn holster that allow my cameras to sit securely on my hips rather than around the neck which causes neck and back pain. The system worked very well. By the end of the game my muscle memory was helping me switch the cameras quickly.

This was my first game shooting basketball. I stayed on one sideline for the entire game. In the first half I was on the Pullman end. The second half I was on Cheney’s end. This game me a chance to be close to Pullman when on Offense and on Defense.

High School Football – Pullman vs Moscow – Sept. 14, 2018

This evening I was given the opportunity to step on the field as a photographer at the Pullman High School football game. This was my first chance to get up close to the game action. I had a great time doing this shoot. I tried getting photos for multiple angles around the field.

I used my Canon 70D with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM II lens. I had to pump up the ISO setting pretty high to allow my shutter speed to be fast enough to mostly eliminate the blur from the action in the photos.

Pullman High School played Moscow (Idaho) High School at Hobbs Field in Pullman. It was all Pullman. After the first half of play the score was 41 – 7. Pullman scored in the second half and started the running clock rule for the game. The final score was 48 – 7.

High School Football – Pullman vs Lakeside – Aug. 31, 2018

This evening I went to the Pullman High School football game against Lakeside High School. The game was held at Hobbs Field in Pullman.

I shot all my photos with my Canon 70D with my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens. As the day turned to night I had to increase my ISO setting in order to be able to get the faster shutter speed for football.

This was my second high school football game and the first one where I was near the sidelines.

Pullman High School went into half time with a 21 – 16 lead. After half they came out and got down to business. They outscored Lakeside by 20 – 7 in the second half. The final score was 41 – 23 in favor of the Pullman Greyhounds.

2018 Goosetown Softball Tournament

The weekend of July 14th and July 15th took me to Anaconda, MT for the Goosetown Softball Tournament. Between playing games I pulled out my camera to take photos at other games taking place.

I used my Canon 70D along with my Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II lens. It is fast glass and allows me a great zoom for the outfield shots. My biggest challenge with the photos was the location of sun as I was moving around between the fields.

This gallery is larger than normal galleries but really it is like having three different games under the heading of one gallery.
